While giving birth to her third child at the University of Washington Hospital something went wrong, and her heart was damaged. The hospital gave her a heart transplant, which changed Pat's life forever. She rebelled against the restrictions placed on her life and the quantity of medicines she had to take, which finally ended with her death.

Kerm was a driver for the Bothell to Seattle bus service. Kerm and Lela then ran a dairy farm in eastern Washington. Later he moved to western Washington and was employed at his uncle Irving's concrete plant. He later worked for the Bothell School district.

Cliff ran the Mobil gasoline station in Bothell; later he started a restaurant called "Cliffs".
